This workshop is nothing new! It is strategically combining the wisdom of several influential sources of literature as well as all of my own teachers and lived experiences. The basic chapters of the workshop have been unpacked from the book “Expressive Movement” and its companion “Generous Movement” written by Alexandra and Roger Pierce. The system of movement known to the world as Strala, founded by Tara Stiles and Mike Taylor is also of huge influence and we will reference their recently published training manual about the topic of moving with ease and through much of our yoga sequencing.
“Be Here Now” and other lectures and articles by Ram Dass will also provide ideological support throughout our workshop and a great wealth of material for continued growth and integration. We will be reading directly from all of these texts as well as other articles throughout the sessions. I cannot credit my many teachers enough and I find new ones throughout each day. The title of the workshop is directly derived from “I Sing the Body Electric” , a favorite poem of mine by Walt Whitman and a most beautiful celebration of the body and soul inseperable. 

MAGGIE HAYES is an artist and yoga guide living in Savannah, GA. She first discovered yoga through her dad and his Rodney Yee VHS tape called “Yoga for athletes” when she was a young teenager and competitive swimmer. She has since undergone teacher trainings through Ashley Ludman at the Costa Rica Yoga Spa and Strala Yoga, home of Tara Stiles and Mike Taylor in NYC. She has been actively leading classes since 2010. Maggie views yoga and the practice of natural movement as a great tool to support all the other beautiful things you do in your life. And as life reflects art, much of her art practice surrounds the inherent expressiveness of the human body and the desire to empower the human spirit. She hopes her classes can bring us all closer to living as our healthiest, most inspired version of ourselves.    

TOUCH is bringing attention to how touch improves our actions. Through touch, we realize that to give and receive are inseperable...no one can touch without also being touched. This session will not only focus on tactile touch but also how we act and feel when we are out in the world. As our final session, it is important to have the work you’ve done throughout the series feel supported and integrated into your “normal” life. We will openly discuss the “dark night of the soul”, a time when new awakening and awareness can bring feelings of loneliness or sadness. Sometimes the “undoing” of our less healthy habits breaks down barriers that we created to avoid pain, and forces us to work through things we might have avoided...which may not instantly reflect in feelings of happiness. However, this is our “winter enduring foliage”. This is what will last us through many cold winters and warm springs of awakenings....weaving bonds of love with the world and searching into our own depths. 

DEFTNESS is a session bout moving with grace and precision. We’ll explore our own definitions of grace and types of activities where we feel graceful and fluent and those other times where we feel clunky or accident-prone. We’ll tune in to how we can clear the cobwebs of inattentiveness and habit and bring deeper sensory awareness to our movements and surroundings. Part of the physical portion of the class will be noticing where and why we hold tension in the hands and feet and how that affects the lightness or heaviness of our impact. 

REVERBERATION & PHRASING is where we disover the play of aliveness and vitality in the body, the “shimmer of action”. We’ll get deeper into how the phrasings of the breath connect with our movements and learn some breathing techniques for at home, work, while you’re driving...anywhere you might want to bring peace to the foreground of the body and mind. Integrated movement refreshes and nourishes the body and that “shimmer” is what lets us feeling energized and relaxed throughout the day. 

CORE SUPPORT is fundamental in natural movement. When we move from the center and find balance along our vertical axis, we move more easily and have healthier posture. When we mobilize the strength of the core, we lessen the likelihood of injury and the imbalances that contribute to injury. This class will focus on how the breath and body connect and bring awareness to core engagement, toning, and strengthening. We will also have a basic anatomy overview comparing mechanical (physical structure) and energetic (chakras) models of the core. 

GENEROUS MOVEMENT is about finding ease and expansiveness in the human form. This whole workshop series is powered by the belief that freedom does not have to be found exclusively in spite of form, but can be actually be found through form as well. When we practice generosity as the true ideal, we create a life experience of self-love, ease, and openness. Generous movement can be summarized as “allowing action to flow easily”, of course, we’ll dig in quite a bit deeper than that. Generosity can be translated to an expression of appreciation, appreciation as gratitude, and perhaps through gratitude we can find joy. 

IDEALS & PERCEPTION is about starting where you are, right here, right now. “One day” instantly changes to “day one” because you are already enough! We can accomplish a lot more when we don’t wait for things to be perfect (because they never really are, even when they might look like it on instagram). This is where we focus on physical movement (asana) as a way to become more in touch with ourselves, from the inside out. We will start to recognize the shift from self-consciousness to self-awareness and begin to feel more perceptive and fluid in our surroundings. Completely diminishing our inner judgmental voice won’t happen in a single workshop unfortunately, but we’ll learn how to move our focus to our inner experience of making space in the body and becoming more generous and kind with ourselves as a way of being. We’ll also differentiate between mechanical and emotional feelings in the body and how they relate. 

LIFTED BY GRAVITY is a session about BALANCE. By understanding how our body weight aids and participates in support, we begin to find a fuller, freer, and more natural state of being. By making friends with gravity, we move less clumsily and have more confidence and capability. We will be focusing on our connection to the earth from different orientations, exploring how our bodies interact with gravity to not only support us, but to actually lift us and give us a feeling of being lighter and more relaxed. We’ll playfully explore balance and inversions, but don’t be scared, I promise that there’s truly something for everyone to get the benefits of going “upside down”...we’ll have options ranging from simply lying down and extending the legs up while laying on a pillow, to tips on how to get comfortable hanging out in a handstand. 
